Going up to LA to visit friends, I have heard many stories about all the kosher foods available off of Pico Boulevard. But there was one legend that I heard, and it was about Pretzel Challah from a place called Got Kosher?. Supposedly, they had mastered a challah that tasted just like a soft pretzel, so much so that you could easily eat it with mustard.
The legend comes with a caveat, though – it has to be specially ordered before Shabbat. It is so in demand that you aren’t always going to get it. But if you do, consider yourself a very lucky kosher person.
So, how fortunate for me that Friday night Danna Elias, the catering sales manager for Got Kosher?, came to Shabbat dinner. And in her hands were these dark brown challahs. They looked almost like they had a gleaming chocolate coating.
We sang and said the blessings, and then passed around these tasty challahs. No one knew to expect when biting into them. We were in Orange County, a land that doesn’t know how to produce a good challah unless it was made in a non-kosher bakery or someone’s house from scratch (you know I love you OC, but it’s G-d’s honest truth).
And then we tasted it. The flavor hit my palette and didn’t let go. It reminded me of being in New York City, eating a warm, pillowy soft pretzel from a cart. There was so salt on the outside, but the echoes to a moment in life is part of what makes good food really special (and if you need any more proof, watch the film Ratatouille).
I ate a lot of good food that night, but nothing seemed to compare to this delicious bread that melted on my tongue. People were fighting to get the chewy center of it. Although people tell you not to fill up on bread, I was pretty happy to do it with this one. I am looking forward to eating it again.
Interestingly enough, the Got Kosher? line of products is more than just this amazing challah. They make salads, soups and entrees and you can order them on Shabbat. Believe it or not, you can actually buy them at certain 7-11 stores across the southland – all you have to do is ask for them. I used to buy mine when I was working for Metro in Pershing Square, and they were extremely tasty.
For more information on Got Kosher?, you can always visit them on Pico Boulevard, or visit them online at www.gotkosherinc.com.
